Sofia Coppola Gets Married in Rome

Congrats going out to Sofia Coppola and Phoenix singer Thomas Mars. The longtime couple tied the knot in a civil ceremony in Italy Saturday. The couple walked down the aisle at the director's family's villa in Bernalda, the town where her grandparents were born.


Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars (Pacific Coast News)Coppola wore a gorgeous lavender gown designed for her by Azzedine Alaia, and her famous father Francis Ford Coppola led her down the aisle. The couple said "I do" in an intimate ceremony that included about 80 family members and friends, including Johnny Depp and George Lucas.

The mayor of the town officiated the ceremony and told interviewers the couple married in Italy because they wanted a small ceremony. "If they wanted to do a Hollywood wedding, they wouldn't have done it here," Mayor Leonardo Chiruzzi said (via Us magazine). "They chose to do it here because it's here -- it's here that is beautiful."

Guests enjoyed a variety of local cheeses and noshes following the ceremony, and then dined on a vanilla cake with chantilly cream. They washed it down with wine from the Coppola family farm.
